The Nature of Grace!

Grace is eternal (2 Tim. 1:9), immutable (Rom. 11:29), sovereign (Rom. 9:11-24), effectual (Eph. 2:8-9; John 6:37, 39, 44, 63-65), and destroys all room for human boasting (1 Cor. 1:29-31; 4:7). It means that the Triune God gets all the praise, honor, and glory for our salvation: The Father for planning it, the Son for purchasing it, and the Holy Spirit for applying and uniting us to it (Eph. 1:2-14).

Christ is not only efficient, but is alone sufficient for salvation (Hebrews 9:12; 10:10) such that our own merit or works righteousness can do nothing to either attain or maintain our justification. The assistance of grace does not even depend on the humility or obedience of man ... for it is a gift of grace itself that we are obedient and humble ...as the Apostle says, "What have you that you did not receive?" (1 Cor. 4:7), and, "But by the grace of God I am what I am" (1 Cor. 15:10). Faith is, therefore, not a product of our un-regenerated human nature (John 1:13, 6:63-65; Rom 9:16) but is exercised as the infallible result of the work of the Holy Spirit opening our eyes and ears to the beauty of the gospel, turning our heart of stone to a heart of flesh and uniting us to Christ. - Monergism.com

Jesus said whoever commits sin is a slave to sin.
After history has ended, we see in the New Heaven and New Earth a Bride prepared for the Lamb (Rev. 21). Before history began, the Father purposed for Christ the Lamb to be slain to secure the redemption of his Bride. In the opening chapters of John we have a beautiful picture of Jesus finding his Bride in a surprising way.

The Jews Were Brought to Palestine for the "Great Massacre"

"And while he (Obama) abandons Israel, leaving her alone and isolated in a hostile world, it is worth listening to one of Gaza’s freely-elected leaders, with whom the President is so eager to do business. This is Yunis al Astal, a member of the Palestinian Authority parliament, spelling out his vision for the genocidal annihilation of the Jewish people. As you will hear, he is deeply concerned with establishing a set of universal rights: he is passionate about free speech, wholly committed to freedom of peaceful assembly, enthusiastic about freedom of religion, and utterly dedicated to equality for men and women under the rule of law." - Arbishop Cranmer

The endless cycle…

The endless cycle of idea and action,

Endless invention, endless experiment,

Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness;

Knowledge of speech, but not of silence;

Knowledge of words, and ignorance of the Word.

All our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance,

All our ignorance brings us nearer to death,

But nearness to death no nearer to God.

Where is the Life we have lost in living?

Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?

Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?

The cycles of Heaven in twenty centuries

Bring us farther from God and nearer to the Dust.

What’s behind death?

Romans 7.13

It was not the Law that brought death into life. Rather sin used what is good (the Law) to carry out evil's terrible design. Even so. the outcome was that sin’s true nature was revealed. The Apostle is saying that one cannot see how evil sin is until one realizes that sin takes what is good, that is, a divine command, and uses this to bring death to humankind.

Rise again!

Now that Easter is over, resurrection remains. In general, what strikes me about resurrection is that it happens at all and that, in some form or other, it is happening all the time. So the use of the present continuous or present progressive tense when He who was seated on the throne says in Revelation 21.5, “I am making all things new.”  It's a new day full of new opportunities to arise anew!  Arise anew from the pain, heartache and drudgery of this life. Rise again! Rise again! Rise again!

Jesus: God’s Way!

Many religious teachers have claimed to present God’s way. But Jesus declared not only that He was initiating God’s path of salvation (Mk 1:15–20) but also that what His hearers did specifically with Him determined their eternal destiny (Mt 10:37–40; 19:23–30). Further, of these religious founders, only Jesus taught that His death would serve as a payment for human sin, achieving what we could not (Mk 10:45; 14:22–25).

Additionally, only Jesus has miracles reported of Him by early sources. Most importantly, according to the Gospels, Jesus taught that His resurrection from the dead would be the sign that evidenced the truth of His message (Mt 12:38–42; 16:1–4; Mk 14:28). For NT writers, Jesus’ resurrection proved His claims were true (Romans 1:3–4; 1 Peter 1:3–6). After all, dead men do not do much! So if Jesus was raised, God must have performed the event in order to approve Jesus’ message (Ac 2:22–24; 17:30–31).

False teachers & the Last Hour!

"Little children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour" (1 John 2.18).

In 1 John 2.18 the Apostle John enters into direct confrontation with false teachers, a confrontation that indirectly had already determined the preceding exposition. And it is not a final confrontation. The theme is taken up again in 1 John 4.1 and in 1 John 5.4.

While the false teachers are identified as πλανῶντες ὑμᾶς (“those deceiving you”) in 1 John 2.26, in our verse they are recognized as ἀντίχριστοι (“antichrists”). With this designation John refers to the time-honored apocalyptic expectation (καθὼς ἠκούσατε, “as you have heard”) that the Antichrist will appear at the end of time. When John says: καὶ νῦν ἀντίχριστοι πολλοὶ γεγόνασιν (“and now many antichrists have come”), he historicizes the single anticipated Antichrist.

So the antichrists are the false teachers and everyone who denies that Jesus is the Christ (1 John 2.22).  Anyone who does not “confess” Christ alone (1 John 4.3) and/or who does not acknowledge that Jesus has come in the flesh (2 John 7) is an antichrist.

Further, the fact that these antichrists have arisen is the sign ὅτι ἐσχάτη ὥρα ἐστίν (“that it is the last hour”). For it is without a doubt that Jesus’ coming is the last hour for the κόσμος (“world”). Now, it is specifically Jesus’ coming to which the deniers of Christ indirectly testify. And to this extent this assertion has the same meaning as 1 John 2.8: “the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.”  This ever present “shining” is precisely what can and should be confirmed for believers by the very appearance of the false teachers.

"And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil" (John 3:19).

SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT (REMINISCERE)

Mathew 21:28–32; Hebrews 11:1f., 6, 8–10, 17–19

Faith is not, therefore, a standing, but a being suspended and hanging without ground under our feet. Or conversely, in faith we abandon whatever we might otherwise regard as our standing, namely, our standing upon ourselves (including all moral and religious, even Christian standing), because in faith we see that it is a false and unreal standing, a hanging without support, a wavering and falling. We abandon it for the real standing in which we no longer stand on ourselves (on our moral and religious, or even our Christian state), and in which we obviously do not stand on our faith as such but - now at least firmly and securely - on the ground of the truth of God and therefore on the ground of the reconciliation which has taken place in Jesus Christ and is confirmed by Him to all eternity.

My son, remember!

Proverbs 3:1

My son, do not forget my teaching: As in Proverbs 2 the teacher of wisdom is speaking to the learner. For My son see Proverbs 1.8. Do not forget is a negative way of saying “Remember!” What is to be remembered is the content of the instruction: “Do not forget all that I have taught you.” Teaching renders the Hebrew word torah, as used in Proverbs 1:8 where the learner was advised not to forsake his mother’s “teaching.” The term should not be translated as “law” in these contexts, even though the law lies behind and supports the teaching given by the wise ones.

But let your heart keep my commandments: Heart, as in Proverbs 2:2, 10, refers to the mind. My commandments was used in Proverbs 2:1 to refer to the instruction given by the teacher of wisdom. The two lines of this verse are parallel, with the same meaning expressed in a negative way in the first line and then in a positive way in the second line. Keep is equivalent to do not forget, that is, it means “remember.” The Hebrew term basically means “guard” or “preserve.” Other translations have “remember,” or "treasure." In other parts of the Old Testament to keep … commandments (in mind) often has the sense of “practice,” “obey,” “put [them] to use,” and some take that to be the meaning here also (“and obey them”).

Ancient moon god!

st-catherines-monasteryExodus 3.1

The name Sinai is probably related to Sin (wilderness of) and may even be an alternate spelling (cf. Exodus 16.1; 17.1; Numbers 33.11–12). Sin is one name of the ancient moon god that desert dwellers worshiped. The mountain is also called Horeb, mostly in Deuteronomy (see also 1 Kings 8.9; 19.8; 2 Chronicles 5.10; Psalm 106.19; Malachi 4.4).

Picture: St. Catherine's Monastery @ the base of Mt.Sinai

Note: The worship of the Moon god " Sin" was widespread and common during the time of Abraham. Contrary to Muslim claims, Abraham was asked to leave Ur of the Chaldees where the moon god Sin was worshipped and migrate to Canaan and worship Jehovah. The Ur of Chaldees is in the region of Babylon. The names of the moon god in Arabia were Wadd, `Amm, Sin, Il Mukah, Hubal and Allah.

YHWH

Exodus 3.14-15

The most important name for God in the OT is the tetragrammaton YHWH (occurs about 6,800 times), usually pronounced ‘Yahweh,’ though the known pronunciation was lost in the postexilic period. Due to the increasing sanctity attached to the name and the consequent desire to avoid misuse, the title Adonai (Heb., ‘My Great Lord’) was pronounced in place of the tetragrammaton. In written texts the vowels of Adonai were combined with the consonants YHWH to remind readers to pronounce Adonai instead of Yahweh. The incorrect hybrid, ‘Jehovah,’ arose from Christian misunderstanding in the late Middle Ages. The respect for the sanctity of the personal name of God is reflected in modern Judaism.

Bolshevism & Islam

"Bolshevism combines the characteristics of the French Revolution with those of the rise of Islam .... Marx has taught that Communism is fatally predestined to come about; this produces a state of mind not unlike that of the early successors of Mahommet .... Among religions, Bolshevism is to be reckoned with Mohammedanism rather than with Christianity and Buddhism. Christianity and Buddhism are primarily personal religions, with mystical doctrines and a love of contemplation. Mohammedanism and Bolshevism are practical, social, unspiritual, concerned to win the empire of this world". Taqiyya

In Islam, Taqiyya, and also kitman, is a doctrine of pious fraud or religious dissimulation, derived from Suras such as III.28, whereby Muslims may under certain circumstances openly deceive infidels by feigning friendship or goodwill provided their heart remains true to Islam. Historian Al-Tabari [died 923 C.E] wrote on Sura XVI.108, "If anyone is compelled and professes unbelief with his tongue, while his heart contradicts him, in order to escape his enemies, no blame falls on him, because God takes his servants as their hearts believe." -- Adapted from The Encyclopaedia of Islam, 2 Edn., and The Al-Qaeda Reader, ed. God or god?

"...regarding ‘God’ as the proper name of the Deity, rather than as essentially a common noun, implies that all users of the word are monotheists and, within that, that all monotheists believe in the same god. Both these propositions seem to me self-evidently untrue. It may or may not be true that any worship of any god is translated by some mysterious grace into worship of one god who actually exists, and who happens to be the only god. That is believed by some students of religion. It is not, however, believed by very many practitioners of the mainline monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) or of the non-monotheistic ones (Hinduism, Buddhism and their cognates). Certainly the Jews and Christians of the first century did not believe it." - Volume One

Babak grew up in Islam only to find out that Allah was not personal and Islam is not peace. Babak discovered that Jesus Christ is the end of the story, not Muhammad. Here are 12 of the parallels that have been noted (this list is by no means exhaustive):

1. Both claimed that the original meaning of the teachings of Jesus and those who preceded him had either been forgotten or corrupted.

2. Both prophets are reported to have come from humble beginnings with no formal education and were barely literate.

3. Holy Books: Both prophets wrote a new holy book that was apparently inspired by God, and both claimed that their holy book was the most correct and perfect book on earth. Also, they both claimed that their holy books were based upon a record stored in heaven. Both religions claim that their Holy Books have been preserved and are accurate to what was originally recorded by their prophets.

4. Both prophets claimed to have had visions and to have been visited by angels. For Muhammad it was the angel Gabriel, and for Smith it was the angel Moroni. Both visions revealed many new teachings that contradict the Bible.

5. Both believed that no true religion existed on Earth and they were there to restore God’s truth. Islam claims that Adam and Abraham were truly Muslim and that it is restoring 'the true faith of Abraham'. Mormons claim to have restored 'the true faith/church' that was on the earth during and after the time of Jesus, before the supposed "Great Apostasy".

6. Both prophets were practicing polygamists and advocated polygamy (and condemn polyandry) by supposed revelation from God. Additionally, both men married very young girls.

“the spirit of terrorism” & WW IV

“Terrorism is not a contemporary form of revolution against oppression and capitalism. No ideology, no struggle for an objective, not even Islamic fundamentalism, can explain it”. - Jean Baudrillard

French theorist Jean Baudrillard (1929–2007) was one of the foremost intellectual figures of the present age whose work combines philosophy, social theory, and an idiosyncratic cultural metaphysics that reflects on key events of phenomena of the epoch. (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

In The Spirit of Terrorism: And Requiem for the Twin Towers (2002a),  Baudrillard argued that the 9/11 attacks represent a new kind of terrorism, exhibiting a

“form of action which plays the game, and lays hold of the rules of the game, solely with the aim of disrupting it… they have taken over all the weapons of the dominant power”.

In other words, the terrorists used airplanes, computer networks, and the media associated with Western societies to produce a spectacle of terror. Essentially, the attacks evoked a global specter of terror.  The very life of Western civilization was under assault by “the spirit of terrorism” and from now on, potential terrorist attacks can occur anytime and anywhere.

Before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Baudrillard complained that the contemporary era was one of “weak events”. As he saw it, no really major historical occurrences had happened in recent history, and that therefore life and thought were becoming increasingly boring.

Shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Baudrillard wrote a paper “L'esprit du terrorisme” published November 2,2001, in Le Monde. He argued that the assaults on the World Trade Center and Pentagon constituted a what should be seen as a “strong event”.  In fact, the attacks were

“the ultimate event, the mother of all events, the pure event uniting within itself all the events that have never taken place.”

For Baudrillard,

“the speeches and commentaries made since September 11 betray a gigantic post-traumatic abreaction both to the event itself and to the fascination that it exerts. The moral condemnation and the sacred union against terrorism are directly proportional to the prodigious jubilation felt at having seen this global superpower destroyed.”

Baudrillard perceived that the terrorists hope that the system will overreact in response to the multiple challenges of terrorism:

“It is the terrorist model to bring about an excess of reality, and have the system collapse beneath that excess”.

In Baudrillard's view, the 9/11 attacks represented “the clash of triumphant globalization at war with itself” and unfolded a “fourth world war”:

“The first put an end to European supremacy and to the era of colonialism; the second put an end to Nazism; and the third to Communism. Each one brought us progressively closer to the single world order of today, which is now nearing its end, everywhere opposed, everywhere grappling with hostile forces. This is a war of fractal complexity, waged worldwide against rebellious singularities that, in the manner of antibodies, mount a resistance in every cell.”

It seems that within every individual there resides a stealthy opposition to monolithic, single world orders and such resistance currently manifests in the terrible formlessness of senseless terror.

Sincerely Yours!

Romans 12:9 begins with the admonition "Love must be sincere..." “Sincere” here translates the Greek 'anypokritos' (lit., “without hypocrisy”), also used of love (2 Corinthians 6:6; 1 Peter 1:22), of faith (1 Timothy 1:5; 2 Timothy 1:5), and of wisdom (James 3:17). Surely,it is the sincere love of God that is shed abroad in the believers heart by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5) and, in turn, this love is ministered by them to others in the Holy Spirit’s power (see, 1 Corinthians 13). Jesus says, "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you" (John 15:12). Enjoy

The Faustian bargain!

What is a Cult?

Webster's Dictionary defines a cult as:

1. A formal religious veneration

2. A system of religious beliefs and rituals also its body of adherents

3. A religion regarded as 'unorthodox or spurious'

4. A system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator

5. a: A great devotion to a person, idea, thing; esp.: such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad, b: A usually small circle of persons united by devotion or allegiance to an artistic or intellectual movement or figure.

Obviously, this definition could include everything from stamp collectors to diehard Dylan fans. However, the most important concern today is not simply who might be somewhat "cultic" in their devotion, but what groups might represent potential problems regarding personal or public safety. That is, groups that are potentially unsafe and/or destructive.

Note: Recently, someone posted on my site that I encourage the killing of "Moslems". Never (Mathew 5.44)! Rather, I encourage the conversion of Muslims to Jesus Christ alone (John 1.1, 14; 3.16; 14.6). The accuser continued in his post to issue a veiled threat to my safety. I would hasten to say that such a threat falls under the category of cultish behavior. May the Prince of Peace forgive this perpetrator and deliver him from the bondage of sin and death (Romans 6.23; 10.9).

Non-Christian Thought!

The Apostle Paul notoriously challenged: "Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?" (I Corinthians 1:20). The Biblical outlook rejects non-Christian claims to knowledge as "knowledge falsely so-called" (I Timothy 6:20) and "vain deceit" (Colossians 2:8), since such claims are allegedly justified autonomously rather than by the standard of God's knowledge (Proverbs 1:7; Romans 1:18-25; Colossians 2:8). In this perspective, then, the chief traits of non-Christian thought are rebellion and its parallel, self rule (epistemological autonomy).

The Koran’s Achilles heel!

Islam makes the absurd claim that the Koran is the absolute literal word of god (the language god speaks, thinks and writes in), which was dictated to, but not written by, Mohammed. Unlike the Holy Bible, there is no human mediation possible in the words of the Koran. Nevertheless, once the book called the Koran is opened to historical verifiability and higher critical interrogation among true scholars and Muslim, non cult members, it cannot be substantiated as god's pure word.

Like most cults, Islam is an all-or-nothing proposition. Any fault in the Koran that was entrusted to humankind, or doubts as to the truthfulness and reliability of Mohammed (not to mention uprightness), should cause the whole system to disintegrate for all but the severely manic. Muslims already subconsciously realize this, because they fly into tantrums whenever either Mohammed or the Koran is 'disrespected'. Under Sharia law any criticism of either Mohammed or the Koran is blasphemy which is punished by death (even the NYT reports this information).

This paranoid, hypersensitive defensiveness and outrage at candid criticism are not the reactions of a confident belief system, but that of an insidious information-control cult. Reactions of this nature give clear evidences of Islam's core deficiencies. In short, they are disingenuous efforts at shielding a terminal vulnerability, an attempt to cover an Achilles heel.

The location of that Achilles heel was amply demonstrated by the Satanic Verses affair, the Motoons rage, and by the Organization of the Islamic Conference's insidious attempts to introduce global laws against 'blasphemy' of Mohammed (not to mention the recent slaughter of vulnerable Christians, Human rights advocates and defenseless office workers worldwide). In fact, the Muslims themselves have put on public display their most vulnerable and dreadful pustule, which is the questionable (though unquestioned) character of the 'Prophet' himself.Ron jr muslim

Note: The above words are highly edited annotations of an anonymous and mostly veiled human source. As I recall, the editor himself was terribly offended and deeply hurt by the recent abduction of his insubordinate, eldest son by a subversive, Islamic conspiracy cult whose goal was to kill (again, see Hebrews 6.6) the Jesus of Holy Scripture.

Allah had three daughters!

"In the original version of the Koran, Allah had three daughters. But as Islam grew more macho and misogynistic, the verses which referred to Allah's daughters were condemned as Satanic and removed. And Muslims would really rather they had never existed in the first place, because they seriously undermine Islam's claim to be monotheistic and the Koran's claim to be the infallible word of God.

So when Salman Rushdie brought the whole embarrassing episode into the light of day with his novel, he received a five-star fatwa from Muslim leaders and had to move from one hiding place to another in disguise. Needless to say the Muslims also rioted.

The Satanic verses affair was all the more enraging for Muslims in that for years their favorite taunt at Christians was 'God has no son', but here was the Muslim God with no fewer than three offspring!

And if one set of verses were recognized as Satanic, might there not be other diabolical passages in the Koran remaining undetected? In fact, who's to say that the entire tirade of venomous ranting and ravings hadn't originated from the Devil?" - Bamiyan

Babylon

'And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It will never be inhabited, Nor will it be settled from generation to generation;
Nor will the Arabian pitch tents there, Nor will the shepherds make their sheepfolds there. But wild beasts of the desert will lie there,
And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches will dwell there, And wild goats will caper there. The hyenas will howl in their citadels, And jackals in their pleasant palaces. Her time is near to come, And her days will not be prolonged.” http://read.ly/Isa13.19.NKJV'>And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride, Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. Fitna the Movie (New Version 4-4-2008)

historicize the Koran!

"To historicize the Koran would in effect delegitimize the whole historical experience of the Muslim community," says R Stephen Humphreys, a professor of Islamic studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. "The Koran is the charter for the community, the document that called it into existence. And ideally - though obviously not always in reality - Islamic history has been the effort to pursue and work out the commandments of the Koran in human life. If the Koran is a historical document, then the whole Islamic struggle of 14 centuries is effectively meaningless."

“Islam Will Not Be the Loser”

"'Of course this (attack on World Trade Center) is 'about Islam.' The question is, what exactly does that mean? For a vast number of 'believing' Muslim men, 'Islam' stands, in a jumbled, half-examined way, not only for the fear of God, but also for a cluster of customs, opinions and prejudices that include ... a more particularized loathing and fear of the prospect that their own immediate surroundings could be taken over — 'Westoxicated' — by the liberal Western-style way of life.... The restoration of religion to the sphere of the personal, its depoliticization, is the nettle that all Muslim societies must grasp in order to become modern. If terrorism is to be defeated, the world of Islam must take on board the secularist-humanist principles on which the modern is based, and without which Muslim countries' freedom will remain a distant dream.'" - Salman Rushdie, The New York Times.

If ever I reach heaven I expect to find three wonders there: first, to meet some I had not thought to see there; second, to miss some I had expected to see there; and third -- the greatest wonder of all -- to find myself there. - John Newton

Walpurgis Night!

Repent Walpurgis’ is a track from Procol Harum’s self-titled first album released in June 1967. It was written by Matthew Fisher, who credits Gary Brooker for the idea to add some Bach in the middle (Prelude No 1 in C major from JS Bach’s48 Preludes and Fugues, Book I).

Don’t talk to aliens!

In this article, Stephen Hawking is quoted as saying that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. Hawking said:
“If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

A Marked Church!

"Why do we willfully act like madmen in searching out the church when Christ has marked it with an unmistakable sign, which, wherever it is seen, cannot fail to show the church there; while where it is absent, nothing remains that can give the true meaning of the church? Paul reminds us that the church was founded not upon men's judgments, not upon priesthoods, but upon the teaching of apostles and prophets [Eph. 2:20]. 'Nay, Jerusalem is to be distinguished from Babylon, Christ's church from Satan's cabal, by the very difference with which Christ distinguishes between them. He says: 'He who is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.' [John 8:47.]" - Calvins Institues, 4.2.4

Dylan & Christmas!

Bob Dylan’s Christmas album, entitled Christmas In the Heart, is to be released on October 13th. All of Bob Dylan’s American royalties on the album, “in perpetuity”, are to go to Feeding America, a charity which provides food to the needy. All of Dylan’s international royalties, in perpetuity, are to go to similar international charities. dylan christmas cover

More details at BobDylan.com, including this:

Bob Dylan commented, “It’s a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone — 12 million of those children – often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from. I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season.”

Christmas In The Heart will be the 47th album from Bob Dylan, and follows his worldwide chart-topping Together Through Life, released earlier this year. Songs performed by Dylan on this new album include, “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Little Drummer Boy” and “Must Be Santa.”

Of course the phrase “Christmas in the heart” can’t help but bring to mind the words of the reformed Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ famous story, when he promises, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”

And another famous quotation on the subject of Christmas with mention of the heart is that of George Matthew Adams, “Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years… Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating Christmas heart.”

Book Four!

Well I’ve made it to the fourth book of Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion. He is expounding upon church, sacraments and civil order in this book. Its official title is as follows: “The External Means or Aims by Which God Invites Us Into the Society of Christ and Holds Us Therein”.

In chapter 1, section 9 speaking of the marks of the church, Calvin points out that the invisible church “becomes visible to our eyes” my the following means of grace. “Where we see the Word of God purely preached and heard, and the sacraments administered according to Christ’s institution, there, it is not to be doubted, a church of God exists (cf. Ephesians 2:20). For his promise cannot fail, ‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them’ (Matthew 18:20).”

Access & Assurance!

Let us draw near to God with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water (Heb. 10:22). For through Jesus we … have access by one Spirit unto the Father (Eph. 2:18). In deed we have boldness and access with confidence trough faith in Jesus (Eph. 3:12). So let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:16).

Chamber's thought!

When you are on the mountaintop, it’s easy to say, “Oh yes, I believe God can do it,” but you have to come down from the mountain to the demon-possessed valley and face the realities that scoff at your Mount-of-Transfiguration belief (see Luke 9:28–42).

Get you behind me!

The accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night (Rev. 12:10). They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony (Rev. 12:11).satanbehind

So who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifies. Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yes, rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us (Rom. 8:33, 34). Having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly (Col. 2:15). That through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage (Heb. 2:14, 15).

Now in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us (Rom. 8:37). So put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. And take the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Eph. 6:11, 17).

Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:57).

Enjoy!

Many Called!

“Many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:1-14) …may be freely paraphrased as follows. Many are called, but there will only be few who in following the call will prove worthy of, and act in accordance with, the fact that as the called of God they are His elect, predestined from all eternity for life with Him and for His service. There will only be few who in the words of 2 Pet. 1:10 are obedient to their calling and make sure, i.e., validate and confirm, their election. There will only be few who really are what they are as called, namely, elect or Christians. - K. Barth, Church Dogmatics IV, 3, p. 485.

Election!

Calvin 09 - Read The Institutes:

10. The elect before their call. There is no 'seed of election'

"The elect are gathered into Christ's flock by a call not immediately at birth, and not all at the same time, but according as it pleases God to dispense his grace to them. But before they are gathered unto that supreme Shepherd, they wander scattered in the wilderness common to all; and they do not differ at all from others except that they are protected by God's especial mercy from rushing headlong into the final ruin of death. If you look upon them, you will see Adam's offspring, who savor of the common corruption of the mass. The fact that they are not carried to utter and even desperate impiety is not due to any innate goodness of theirs but because the eye of God watches over their safety and his hand is outstretched to them!" - The Institutes of the Christian Religion, 3.24.10
